2025 Mar 5-6: Dubrovnik

Our 90-day visa exile from Schengen being up as of the 2nd (we left Deutschland Dec 2), we decided to take a couple days and go to Dubrovnik, Croatia (Croatia is in Schengen). It’s a 1-1/2 hour bus ride.

As you will see, Dubrovnik is spectacular.

We took a jillion pictures. Best of Wed 4th:

Best of Thu 5th:

And now the details…

Border crossing, we got out of the bus, showed our passports, & got back on. Twice: leaving Montenegro and entering Croatia.

Passport control:

Approaching Dubrovnik:

It’s an hour walk from the bus depot to the old town, fortunately through this open space:

We stayed in a little hotel that seemed still to be under construction - no sign on the door, empty lobby with dust & construction equipment - but the room was very nice and it was amazingly cheap for Dubrovnik: 60euros. ‘Luna hotel’. Didn’t think to take pics in the room, but here’s the street (no cars, narrow streets in Dubrovnik) and front door:

Had a very good lunch at Taj Mahal Bosnian Cuisine. Here’s the food, and looking into the kitchen after dark:

Poked around all afternoon. Streets & buildings made of stone, streets too narrow for cars.

Getting on toward sunset, we happened on a gap in the western wall…

Back inside the wall, strolled some more, sat at The Troubadore for a drink & listened to a pretty good crooner do American standards.

Up @ 6 thurs am to catch sunrise:

Walked around, had breakfast on Liza square:

You can circle the entire old town atop the wall. We did:

More pokin around:

And into the 15th century Franciscan Monastery:

Outside the wall for a good lunch at Dubravka 1836:

Back in, to the Rector’s Palace:

Retrieved the backpack (Toni, the hotel proprietor, kept it for us for the day) and a tea on the harbor:

…and the hour-long march back to the bus depot:

On the sunset bus out of town:
